Review Summary
Victor Hi-Pro Plus is a high-quality dry dog food. Its nutrient profile is significantly above average, and it provides an above-average proportion of protein and fat and a significantly below-average proportion of carbohydrates. This nutrient profile is very satisfactory for the majority of dogs regardless of activity level.
The formula includes a range of high-quality meat and fish ingredients such as Beef, Chicken, and Pork. In addition to these meat ingredients, the formula contains a small range of grain ingredients such as Millet. While we dont believe grains are the ideal source of carbohydrates in dog food, they only contribute a modest sum of carbohydrates.
The large number of ingredients present in Victor Hi-Pro Plus, including meat and fish, may mean that it is unsuitable for dogs with serious dietary allergies or sensitivities, as there are a number of ingredients that could trigger these. However, for those without dietary issues, this is a very nutritious and high-quality dog food, and one which we are happy to recommend.

Nutritional Analysis
The ideal nutrition for a dog is entirely dependant on their unique circumstances. However, a high proportion of protein and fat combined with a lower proportion of carbohydrates is the most appropriate nutrition profile for the vast majority of dogs.
Dogs are very capable of consuming a high proportion of carbohydrates; however, a diet high in protein and fat is more appropriate and a better reflection of their natural ancestral diet.
Carbohydrate Content Analysis
Dogs use carbohydrates as a simple energy source. Dogs do not require significant carbohydrates in their diet, and they are commonly added to reduce cost and increase shelf life.
As the chart above displays, a maximum of 30% of Victor Hi-Pro Plus calories are derived from carbohydrates.
Please note that this is the maximum amount of carbohydrates as calculated by the guaranteed analysis. In reality, this value of carbohydrates is likely to be a lot lower. This is significantlybelowaverage for a Dry Dog Food.
The carbohydrates present in this formula are from a small range of grains, such as Millet. We do not generally advise for the use of grains in dog food, but there are some circumstances where they can be appropriate, such as dogs with severe allergies or sensitivities.
The overall proportion of carbohydrates is low, which is very satisfactory. While slightly above what we would consider ideal, it would be very well suited for the majority of dogs.
Protein Content Analysis
Dogs use Protein for growth, development, and maintenance. Excess protein can be burned as calories. As the chart above displays, a minimum of 28% of Victor Hi-Pro Plus calories are derived from protein.
Please note that this is the minimum amount of protein as calculated by the guaranteed analysis. In reality, this value of protein is likely to be higher. This isabove average for a Dry Dog Food.
The protein used in this formula is sourced from a large range of meat and fish meal ingredients such as Beef, Chicken, and Menhaden Fish Meal.
Meat and fish-based proteins such as Beef are the preferred source and can provide the complete amino acid coverage needed for growth, repair, and maintenance.
This protein content will be sufficient for most dogs, including those who are more active. However, the most active dogs may need additional protein beyond this proportion.
Fat Content Analysis
Dogs use fat as a concentrated energy source. In addition, fats also play a role in development and maintenance. As the chart above displays, a minimum of 42% of Victor Hi-Pro Plus calories are derived from Fat.
Please note that this is the minimum amount of fat as calculated by the guaranteed analysis. In reality, this value of fat is likely to be a lot higher. This is significantlyabove average for a Dry Dog Food.
The fat present in this formula appears to be from the Beef, Pork, and Menhaden Fish ingredients. Meat and fish-based fats are the natural sources of fat in a dogs diet.
This level of fat is sufficient to satisfy the energy needs of almost all dogs, including those who are extremely active.
You would imagine that the fish ingredients contribute to an increased level of the Omega 3 Fatty Acids. However, the overall level is quite low and unimpressive.
Calorie Density
Calorie Density is essentialto understand as it determines the portion size of food your dog will require per day or meal. Calorie Density is commonly measured in calories per kg or per cup.
Dog food formulas with high-calorie densities can be more cost-efficient to purchase while recipes with lower calorie density can be advantageous to dogs attempting weight loss or who are relatively inactive.
Overall, Victor Hi-Pro Plus contains an average of 3895 kcal/kg 450 kcal/cup.

However, also note that every dog food is different, and some will be considerably closer to the guaranteed analysis than others.

In-Depth Meat/Fish Ingredient Review
The meat and fish ingredients of dog food are, without a doubt, the most important. They are critical as they provide the majority of the protein and fat that dogs desperately need.
Also, these ingredients would have made up the bulk of dogs ancestors diet. Therefore, the quality of a dog food formulas meat and fish ingredients is crucial. Victor Hi-Pro Plus contains foursources of meat or fish.
The primary meat source present is Beef Meal. Beef Meal is considered a high-quality source of protein. Meat Meal is a concentrated form of meat that has already had the majority of its moisture removed.
This means that gram for gram it is much richer in protein and other nutrients. Beef Meal contains the same vitamins and minerals as Beef but in higher concentrations. This includes high levels of minerals like Iron and Zinc.
The secondary meat source present is Chicken Meal. Chicken Meal is considered a high-quality source of protein.
Meat Meal is a concentrated form of meat that has already had the majority of its moisture removed. This means that gram for gram it is much richer in protein and other nutrients.
Chicken Meal will contain the same vitamins and minerals as Chicken but in higher concentrations. This includes high levels of Niacin and Vitamin B6.
Another meat source present is Pork Meal. Pork Meal is considered a high-quality source of protein.
Meat Meal is a concentrated form of meat that has already had the majority of its moisture removed. This means that gram for gram it is much richer in protein and other nutrients.
Pork Meal will contain the same vitamins and minerals as Pork but in higher concentrations. This includes Thiamin and significant levels of Iron.
Another fish source present is Menhaden Fish Meal. Menhaden Fish Meal is considered an average-quality source of fish. Menhaden Fish are small oily fish that are not fit for human consumption.
The oil is removed from these fish, and the leftover flesh is turned into fish meal. This fish meal is high in protein.
Unfortunately, as most of the oil has been removed, Menhaden Fish Meal is not high in the beneficial Omega Fatty Acids like other fish.
In-Depth None-Meat Ingredient Review
Millet is a cereal grain that is high in carbohydrates and plant-based proteins. It is considered a low-quality addition to dog food.
Grains such as millet are not biologically appropriate for dogs and should be avoided if possible. Millet has little nutritional value past its carbohydrate and protein content.
Flaxseed is a beneficial ingredient that is commonplace in higher quality dog food. Flaxseed contains high levels of the Omega 3 and 6 Fatty Acids, which provide a range of health benefits such as healthier skin and fur and improved cognitive function.
Also, Flaxseed contains high levels of protein for a plant-based ingredient. Finally, Flaxseed provides Lignans which can help reduce inflammation and cholesterol.
Dried Chicory Root or Chicory Root Extract is an additive or supplement to dog food. It can provide a range of health benefits, including soluble fiber to enable regular passage of stool, probiotics to aid and promote digestion, as well as potentially eliminate or prevent intestinal worms.
While these benefits are not fully proven, there is strong evidence behind them. The proportion of Chicory Root used in most dog food recipes is tiny and does not contributemeaningfulnutrition. Find out more inDried Chicory Root In Dog Food.
Alfalfa is a flowering plant that is closely related to Peas and other legumes. Alfalfa has a long history of use in livestock feed and as a supplement for humans.
It has a similar proportion of protein to other legumes, which means it can contribute to a minor sum if there is a sufficient quantity used.
Alfalfas greatest strength is the vast range of vitamins and minerals it provides, including Vitamin K, Vitamin C, Beta Carotene, Potassium, and Calcium. Find out more about Alfalfa in our article Alfalfa In Dog Food.
