Ingredients Analysis

The first ingredient in this dog food is beef meal. Beef meal is considered a meat concentrate and contains nearly 300% more protein than fresh beef.

The second ingredient is sorghum. Sorghum (milo) is a starchy cereal grain with a nutrient profile similar to corn.

Since it is gluten-free and boasts a smoother blood sugar behavior than other grains, sorghum may be considered an acceptable non-meat ingredient.

The third ingredient is chicken fat. Chicken fat is obtained from rendering chicken, a process similar to making soup in which the fat itself is skimmed from the surface of the liquid.

Chicken fat is high in linoleic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid essential for life. Although it doesnt sound very appetizing, chicken fat is actually a quality ingredient.

The fourth ingredient is pork meal, another protein-rich meat concentrate that can also be high in ash about 25-30%.

However, the ash content of the final product is typically adjusted in the recipe to allow its mineral profile to meet AAFCO guidelines.

The next two ingredients listed are chicken meal and menhaden fish meal, yet more high protein meat concentrates.

Fish meal is typically obtained from the clean, dried, ground tissue of undecomposed whole fish and fish cuttings of commercial fish operations.¹

The seventh ingredient is blood meal. Blood meal is a by-product of slaughter and used to make high-protein (very low ash) animal feeds.

Yet even though some consider it a controversial ingredient, blood meal can still be considered a quality source of animal protein.

The eighth ingredient is millet, a gluten-free grain harvested from certain seed grasses. Millet is hypoallergenic and naturally rich in B-vitamins and fiber as well as other essential minerals.

The ninth ingredient is alfalfa meal. Although alfalfa meal is high in plant protein (about 18%) and fiber (25%), this hay-family item is more commonly associated with horse feeds.

From here, the list goes on to include a number of other items.

But to be realistic, ingredients located this far down the list (other than nutritional supplements) are not likely to affect the overall rating of this Victor product.

With 7 notable exceptions

First, tomato pomace is a controversial ingredient, a by-product remaining after processing tomatoes into juice, soup and ketchup.

Many praise tomato pomace for its high fiber and nutrient content, while others scorn it as an inexpensive pet food filler.

Just the same, theres probably not enough tomato pomace here to make much of a difference.

Next, dried seaweed meal is a product made from a family of brown algae known as Fucaceae (Rockweed). Although it does contain a number of healthy nutrients, seaweed meal is primarily used as a source of inexpensive carbohydrates (about 60% dry matter).

This item is only rarely used to make pet food and is more typically found in feeds for cattle, horses, hogs, hens and sheep.

In addition, we note the use of taurine, an important amino acid associated with the healthy function of heart muscle. Although taurine is not typically considered essential in canines, some dogs have been shown to be deficient in this critical nutrient.

Since taurine deficiency appears to be more common in pets consuming grain-free diets, we view its presence in this recipe as a positive addition.

Next, this food contains chelated minerals, minerals that have been chemically attached to protein. This makes them easier to absorb. Chelated minerals are usually found in better dog foods.

Additionally, brewers yeast can be a controversial item. Although its a by-product of the beer making process, this ingredient is rich in minerals and other healthy nutrients.

Fans believe yeast repels fleas and supports the immune system.

Critics argue yeast ingredients can be linked to allergies. This may be true, but (like all allergies) only if your particular dog is allergic to the yeast itself.

In addition, a vocal minority insists yeast can increase the risk of developing the life-threatening condition known as bloat. However, this is a claim weve not been able to scientifically verify.

In any case, unless your dog is specifically allergic to it, yeast can still be considered a nutritious additive.

Whats more noteworthy here is that brewers yeast contains about 48% protein, a factor that must be considered when judging the actual meat content of this dog food.

We also find some vegetable oil, a generic oil of unknown origin. The ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fats in any oil is nutritionally critical and can vary significantly (depending on the source).

Without knowing more, its impossible to judge the quality of an item so vaguely described. However, compared to a named animal fat, a generic vegetable oil cannot be considered a quality ingredient.

And lastly, this product includes selenium yeast. Unlike the more common inorganic form of selenium (sodium selenite), this natural yeast supplement is considered a safer anti-cancer alternative.

Nutrient Analysis

Based on its ingredients alone, Victor Classic Dog Food looks like an above-average dry product.

The dashboard displays a dry matter protein reading of 33%, a fat level of 22% and estimated carbohydrates of about 37%.

As a group, the brand features an average protein content of 28% and a mean fat level of 18%. Together, these figures suggest a carbohydrate content of 46% for the overall product line.

And a fat-to-protein ratio of about 64%.

Which means this Victor product line contains

Above-average protein. Above-average fat. And below-average carbs when compared to a typical dry dog food.

Even when you consider the protein-boosting effect of the alfalfa meal and brewers yeast, this looks like the profile of a kibble containing a notable amount of meat.

VICTOR Formula & Recipes: Options for Your Dog

VICTOR has three primary product lines or dry food formulas, one premium formula, and several canned food options.

All VICTOR kibbles contain the brands patented VPRO ingredient blend of selenium yeast, mineral complexes, prebiotics, and probiotics to promote digestion and provide immune system support.

1. VICTOR Classic

Classic is VICTORs line of grain-inclusive formulas for active dogs that includes 5 recipes.

Each VICTOR Classic recipe is high in protein and features multiple meat meals for maximum flavor and nutrition. Mixed protein recipes are excellent for palatability, though they can be a problem for dogs with food allergies.

VICTOR Classic recipes feature labeled meat meals as opposed to whole meats. While meat meal doesnt sound as appetizing to us humans as deboned meats, its denser in protein than whole meat, as it contains less water.

That said, meat meals are often used in place of whole meats for cost-saving purposes rather than for qualitys sake. Wed prefer to see a whole protein at the top of an ingredient list, but meat meals arent necessarily a bad inclusion.

Meat meal is the top ingredient for all VICTOR Classic recipes except for Multi-Pro, which features grain sorghum first. While this grain is a good energy source, wed rather see a protein such as labeled meat meal or deboned meat at the top of its ingredient list.

After labeled meat meals, the recipes contain grains, including grain sorghum, whole grain millet, and dehydrated alfalfa meal. These gluten-free grains are tolerated by most dogs and provide lasting energy and fiber for digestion. There isnt anything really to complain about here, as theyre quality sources without any murkiness.

VICTOR Classic recipes also feature chicken fat for omega fatty acids and flavor. It might sound gross to us, but its actually a quality ingredient and wont elicit an allergic response in dogs with chicken allergies, as it contains no chicken protein (proteins are what triggers allergic reactions.)

As with all VICTOR dry dog foods, Classic recipes contain a blend of prebiotics and probiotics for optimal digestion. These can help restore or maintain healthy bacteria levels, potentially leading to better nutrient absorption, less gas, and better stools.

When it comes to controversial ingredients, there are a few, including dried blood meal. This is a by-product obtained during animal harvest, so its not our favorite ingredient to see.

That said, it is a good source of protein, though wed rather see real meat in its place. Dried tomato pomace and seaweed meal are also questionable, as theyre usually used as low-cost sources of fiber.

VICTOR Classic doesnt contain any fresh produce, which were accustomed to seeing in pricier dog foods. Wed expect to see more than carrot powder and tomato pomace at this price.

Again, this is a protein-rich ingredient thats packed with nutrients, but some owners might want to see real meat here at this price.

VICTOR Select comes in grain-inclusive and grain-free options, with grain-inclusive options featuring quality grains like brown rice and grain sorghum. These grains are easily digestible and provide bulk to stool, in addition to helping your dog feel full longer.

On the flip side, VICTOR Select grain-free recipes are a good option for dogs with grain intolerances (which are pretty rare).

However, they include peas and other legumes in place of grains a factor thats been correlated with DCM in recent studies. For this reason, we recommend consulting your vet before making the switch, particularly if you have a DCM-prone breed, such as a Doberman or boxer.

VICTOR Select recipes contain a mixture of prebiotics and probiotics for digestive health, which is a common area of concern for dogs with food sensitivities. This balanced mixture includes Enterococcus faecium, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Bacillus subtilis.

As with the VICTOR Classic line, VICTOR Select doesnt include much in the way of fruits and vegetables other than peas and sweet potato in the grain-free options. They do have carrot powder and tomato pomace, which arent necessarily bad, but they arent fresh produce, either.

As with other VICTOR formulas, beef meal or chicken meal are the top ingredients for all VICTOR Purpose recipes. These arent as desirable as deboned beef or chicken, but theyre still a rich source of protein.

Our only complaint is that, at this price point, wed expect whole meat as the first ingredient of at least some recipes.

VICTOR Purpose grain-inclusive foods include healthy grains like whole grain brown rice, whole grain millet, and grain sorghum. These are easily digested by dogs and provide a lasting full feeling while still offering nutrients.

Grain-free VICTOR Purpose recipes provide energy and roughage with peas, sweet potatoes, and garbanzo beans. While these ingredients are common in grain-free foods, they have been correlated with DCM, as we mentioned previously, so you should consult your vet before switching to a grain-free, legume/potato-inclusive diet like these.

Prebiotics and probiotics remain staples in these recipes for digestive wellness, while VICTOR Purpose foods offer specialized ingredients that vary by recipe.

For example, their Senior Healthy Weight recipe is made for older, less active dogs and includes added glucosamine and chondroitin for joint health. Meanwhile, the Performance recipe is nutrient-dense and full of calories for active, working dogs.

The by-product dried blood meal is included in several VICTOR Purpose recipes, and while it isnt everyones favorite, it does provide protein from an animal source as opposed to artificial means.
