Why Cant I Stop Crying?
There are no guidelines for how much crying is too much. Conditions like depression or pseudobulbar affect may cause you to cry more frequently. Crying is natural and may help you feel better.
Overview
Some people cry while reading a sad book or watching videos of baby animals. Others cry only at funerals. And for certain people, the mere hint of anything that arouses emotions can cause tears to flow.
If youve ever had tears well up in a meeting or wept out loud in a movie theatre, you may have wondered if its normal. Is there such a thing as crying too often or too much?
There are no guidelines for how much crying is too much. A study in the 1980s found that women cry an average of 5.3 times per month and men cry an average of 1.3 times per month. A newer study found that the average duration for a crying session was eight minutes.
If youre concerned that youre crying too much, if you cant seem to stop crying, or have started crying more than usual, talk to your doctor. It may be a sign of depression or another mood disorder.
There are a lot of reasons, besides having an immediate emotional response, why you may cry more than normal. Tearfulness is frequently associated with depression and anxiety. People often experience the two conditions at the same time. Certain neurological conditions can also make you cry or laugh uncontrollably.
Depression
Depression is a mood disorder in which you have persistent feelings of sadness that last more than a few weeks. Activities you once found pleasurable may no longer interest you. Symptoms of depression may include:
- sadness and gloominess
- feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness
- low energy
- difficulty concentrating
Your crying may be related to depression if you:
- cry over small things or have trouble identifying why youre crying
- cry much more than normal
- have trouble stopping your tears
Excessive crying is more likely to happen if your depression is milder. People with severe depression often have trouble crying or expressing other emotions.
Anxiety
We all have times when were nervous and anxious. With anxiety disorder, though, you experience worry and nervousness more often, maybe even on a daily basis. Symptoms often include:
- edginess or irritability
- excessive worry
- muscle tension
- fatigue
- difficulty focusing or concentrating
- trouble sleeping
Pseudobulbar affect
Sudden uncontrollable crying, laughing, or feeling anger can be a symptom of a condition called pseudobulbar affect (PBA). PBA is an involuntary neurological state related to an injury or disturbance in parts of your brain that control your emotions.
Sometimes called emotional incontinence, the uncontrolled emotions associated with PBA often dont match how you feel or what youre experiencing. Because the symptoms are similar, PBA may be misdiagnosed as depression. PBA often occurs in people who have:
Gender and personality
Studies indicate that, on average, women cry more often than men. One possible reason for this is that testosterone may inhibit crying. Cultural norms may also account for some of the differences in crying among men and women.
Besides a difference between sexes, people who are empathetic and concerned about the well-being of others may cry more than people who are less empathetic. People who are anxious, insecure, or obsessive, cry more and for longer periods of time than other people.
Glands located above your eyes produce most of your tears. Theyre called lachrymal glands. The word lachrymal means tear. Every time you blink, tears flow to your eyes from ducts attached to your lachrymal glands. This keeps the surface of your eyes lubricated and protects them from substances like dust, smoke, or onion gasses. Tears also drain into your nose.
Tears are made up of:
- water
- salt
- protective antibodies
- enzymes
The chemistry of tears caused by emotion, sometimes called psychic tears, is different than that of tears that moisten and protect your eyes. Psychic tears contain more of the protein-based hormones your body produces under stress.
Theres limited research on the science and psychology of crying. Some researchers believe crying is a way your body gets rid of stress-related hormones. Other studies show tears may trigger the release of endorphins. Endorphins are hormones that make you feel good and reduce pain.
A recent focus of research is the response people have to the chemical content of tears.
Crying doesnt necessarily make you feel better. In one study, only about 30 percent of participants said crying made their mood improve. Crying is more likely to make you feel better if:
- you have the emotional support of a friend
- youre crying because of a positive experience
- it enables you to understand your emotions better
- it helps you resolve an issue or problem
If you have symptoms of depression or anxiety, or emotional responses that dont feel right, dont try to tough it out alone. Mood disorders can have a negative impact on every part of your life. This includes your relationships, work, or school. They also make you more vulnerable to physical illnesses.
Talk with your doctor about what youre experiencing. Your doctor may refer you to a psychiatrist or therapist who specializes in working with people who have mood disorders.
Approximately 80 percent of people with depression improve significantly with treatment. Treatment for depression and anxiety can include psychotherapy (talk therapy) and medications. Self-care is important, too. Many people find relaxation techniques, meditation, mindfulness, and exercise helpful.
Therapy and medications can also alleviate the effects of PBA. Some people with PBA see an improvement after taking a drug called dextromethorphan hydrobromide and quinidine sulfate (Nuedexta). Nuedexta was developed just for PBA, and its the only drug thats approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat the condition.
Antidepressants may also be prescribed for PBA. However, the FDA hasnt approved the use of antidepressants as a PBA treatment. When a drug is used to treat a condition other than the ones its FDA-approved for, then thats considered off-label drug use.
Some people cry more than others. Women tend to cry more than men, even in cultures where its acceptable for males to cry. Crying more than is normal for you may be a symptom of depression or a neurological disorder.
If youre concerned about the amount youre crying, talk to your doctor.
Theres nothing wrong with crying, but if you want to try to manage your tears, there are some things you can try:
- Focus on taking slow, deep breaths. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. This may help you relax, which could also stop the flow of tears.
- Relax your facial muscles so your expression is neutral.
- Think about something repetitious, like a poem, a song, or nursery rhyme youve memorized.
- Take a walk or find another way to temporarily remove yourself from a stressful or upsetting situation.
Fromm and Champion Petfoods' Decision to Leave Chewy.com Lauded
Two pet food manufacturers have severed ties with Chewy.com. Fromm Family Foods in Mequon, Wis., and Champion Petfoods, which has U.S. offices in Auburn, Ky., announced that they will no longer sell their products through the online retailer, which was acquired by PetSmart in May, earning both companies praise from fast-growing pet retail chain Bentleys Pet Stuff.
"The decisions made by Fromm and Champion Pets this past week prove to me there are companies who do not choose the bottom line above all, and made me have some extra hope," said Giovanni Senate, vice president of Bentelys Pet Stuff. "Yes, we know that some companies see the opportunity in the industry as a big one, but independents make choices day in and day out to not make decisions based on market share and profit."
The retailer also praised Tuffys Pet Foods, maker of NutriSource, Pure Vita and Natural Plant brands, which terminated its relationship with Chewy.com in April.
"Fromm and Champion didnt drop Chewy to make it more difficult for their customers," added Senafe. "They did it to try and help their advocates (the independents) surviveat Bentleys we believe in rotating and being loyal to the quality of the products we carry, not the brands behind them, but I am saying they are tremendously different than the hundreds of other brands being sold on these online sites or even in some brick-and-mortar stores Thank you for giving the independent a chance. Thank you for realizing a small selection is harder not easier."
Fromm Family Foods announced its decision on its Facebook page.
"Fromm Family Foods is a fifth generation family owned-and-operated company with a long history of selling our products exclusively to independent pet retailers," the manufacturer wrote. "Fromm believes our products are best sold by retailers who know our product and can offer pet parents whats right for their specific dog or cat. As a result of Chewys sale to PetSmart, they are no longer an authorized retailer of Fromm products."
Fromm directed customers to its website for information on local retailers that will continue to carry their products, as well as a current list of authorized internet retailers.
Champion posted a similar note on its Facebook page. "For more than 25 years, weve been committed to the pet specialty channel," the manufacturer said. "We choose to work exclusively with pet specialists who have intimate knowledge of our foods and are committed to providing expert advice to pet lovers. Chewy has been a longtime retail partner, and weve enjoyed our association with them. However, due to their recent acquisition, Chewy no longer meets our pet specialty requirement to be an Approved ACANA and ORIJEN Retailer."
According to PetSmart officials, Chewy will continue to be led by CEO Ryan Cohen and operate largely as an independent subsidiary of PetSmart, focusing on its current business strategy, while PetSmart will continue to execute its strategic initiatives across the combined company. Both companies will use their shared innovative capabilities and offerings in order to deliver the most value and convenience to customers, officials added.

At first, puppy crying can be cute.
You want to comfort that sweet little fluff and hold them tight.
You want to let them know mama is here and everything is going to be fine.
But when you cant sleep because your puppy is crying, the cuteness wears off real fast.
If youre currently going through this, just know that its a phase and one day youre going to wish your adult dog was a sweet little puppy again.
But thats not much help, is it?
In this article, were going to dive into all the reasons why puppies cry, and how to stop each one of them.
Lets go!
How To Get Your Puppy To Stop Crying
Puppies cry for different reasons, so the ways to get your puppy to stop varies.
Well cover each of the reasons, but theres one important thing to remember
Do not punish your puppy for crying.
At this stage in life, its one of the few ways they know how to communicate, its a natural instinct thats helped their ancestors survive in the wild for many years, and they wont understand why youre punishing them.
Plus, according to this article at K9OfMine.com, punishment can be a form of attention for bored dogs, and we dont want to give them what they want when theyre crying in the crate (more on this later).
The good news is this: with proper training and understanding on your part, your puppy will stop crying.
There are lots of ways to attack this problem, but lets start with the most common issue
My Puppy Wont Stop Crying In The Crate
Crying in the crate is the most common issue when it comes to puppy crying.
Your puppy may cry in the crate for several reasons, including being:
- Scared or lonely
- Not tired
- Uncomfortable
- Bored
- Needs to potty
- Hurt
- Sick
- Hungry
- Wanting Attention
Well get into identifying each reason and its solution below, but heres the big rule for crying in the crate:
Do Not Positively Reinforce Crying In The Crate.
Puppies are smart, and if every time they cry you let them out, they will continue to cry.
Instead, positively reinforce their good behavior.
If youre taking them out of the crate, wait until theyve settled down before taking them out.
If you positively reinforce their good behavior, puppies can learn to quit crying in the crate in just a few short days (although some do take longer than that).
Is Your Puppy Crying Because Shes Scared or Lonely?
Your puppy may be crying in the crate because shes scared and lonely.
Shes in a new house full of unknown monsters that could be trying to eat her.
Shes lost her pack and is all alone in her new crate.
In the wild, when puppies find themselves alone, they cry to let other members of the pack know where they are.
So crying in the crate is natural.
Solution
What your puppy needs to know is that youll come back, and the crate is safe.
The shortcut to teaching her this is to actually not leave her at night, but put her crate in your room.
Shell be able to smell and hear you, which will appease the loneliness.
What we did with our dog was instead of putting the crate in our room, we slept out in the living room (where the crate was) for the first three nights we brought him home.
The fourth night we left him alone, and of course, he didnt like it, but within a few days, the crying stopped.
To help your pup realize that the crate is safe, put a toy or two in there with her, play games involving the crate, and feed her in the crate.
Eventually, she will get comfortable and stop crying because shes scared or lonely.
Is Your Puppy Crying Because Shes Not Tired?
If your puppy is not getting enough exercise and burning off that crazy puppy energy, her reaction when you put her in the crate might be to cry and whine.
Putting a puppy, especially a very young puppy, full of energy in a crate is setting them up for failure.
Solution
Go play!
Games of tug and fetch, and training to mentally tire out your pup, are great ways to burn off some of that puppy energy.
Playing with toys is another great way to wear them out.
Is Your Puppy Crying Because Hes Uncomfortable?
Does your puppy have a nice, comfy bed?
Is there enough room in the crate?
If your puppy is uncomfortable in his crate, then he might let you know by crying.
Solution
Check to make sure they have a comfortable bed with enough room.
Of course, you dont want them to have too much room that they pee on one side, but they do need enough room to lay down and be comfortable.
Is Your Puppy Crying Because She Needs To Potty?
If your puppy is crying because they need to potty, thats great news!
That means that your puppy is starting to be potty trained.
But obviously, they cant tell you that they need to potty, so youll have to figure that out yourself.
Has she gone in the past hour?
Did she just drink a lot?
Did she just eat?
Did she just play or chew a lot?
All of these activities could cause your pup to have to go potty.
Make sure not to put your puppy in the crate with a full bladder.
This will set them up for failure in your crate training efforts, and cause the process to be slow.
Solution
Take them out to potty!
Give them some time outside to make sure theyve completely done all of their business.
Is Your Puppy Crying Because Hes Bored?
Hey, nobody likes to be bored.
And since puppies have the attention span of about two seconds, theyre easily bored, and crying can be their way of expressing that.
Usually, a bored puppy is a bad puppy.
This is when theyll start chewing on things theyre not supposed to, like shoes, furniture, or their bed.
Solution
Tire them out or keep them entertained.
You achieve both of those by giving them fun, exciting toys to play with, taking them out for walks, or playing with them before putting them in the crate.

Is Your Puppy Crying Because Hes Hurt?
Puppies, like kids, may cry because theyre hurt.
If your puppy is crying and youre not sure why, give them the old rub down.
Play with all of his limbs and joints, and if he yelps when you come to a certain part of his body, that may be why he is crying.
Another giveaway may be a limp.
Carefully watch your pup walk to see if theres anything out of the normal in how they move.
Solution
Of course, the solution hes crying because hes hurt is to call the vet.
They can help properly diagnose what is wrong and implement a treatment to get him better.
Is Your Puppy Crying Because Shes Sick?
Just like if theyre hurt, puppies may cry because theyre sick.
Is your puppy lethargic?
Or avoiding you, when shes normally following you?
Is she vomiting?
Does she have diarrhea?
Has she not gone in a few days? (A sign she may be constipated.)
Is she excessively licking or biting an area? (This may be a sign of infection, allergies, parasites, ticks or fleas.)
These may be signs that shes sick, which may cause her to cry.
Solution
Of course, the solution to a sick, crying puppy is to call the vet.
They will help diagnose whats wrong and come up with a solution to get her feeling like the spring chicken she is.
Is Your Puppy Crying Because Shes Hungry?
Most people get crabby when theyre hungry, and puppies are no different.
Most puppies act like they havent had a meal in weeks when you bust out the food bag, but you can usually tell that theyre not getting enough food by how they act between meals.
Are they full of energy, like a normal pup?
Or are they lethargic?
If theyre lethargic, it may be a sign that theyre not getting enough food.
Solution
Check with your vet to see how much food you should be feeding your puppy, and make sure shes getting enough.
Is Your Puppy Crying Because She Wants Attention?
When puppies are between 8-12 weeks old they go through the bonding stage.
This is when they learn who their new parents are and establishes a strong connection with them.
If they feel like theyre not getting enough attention, they may cry to let you know.
Warning:
If they cry because they want attention, and you give it to them every time, they may learn that they get attention every time they cry, which can lead to continued crying.
Solution:
Give your puppy lots of attention and love when youre playing with them.
Let them know that youre their parent and that you love them, but if theyre crying because they want even more attention, do not reward their crying.
Conclusion
Your puppy may cry for many reasons, including being:
- Scared or lonely
- Not tired
- Uncomfortable
- Bored
- Needs to potty
- Hurt
- Sick
- Hungry
- Wanting Attention
Go through each of these possible reasons for crying, and unless your puppy is sick or hurt, remember to not reinforce crying.
If you positively reinforce good behavior, puppy crying can stop in as quick as a few short days.
