Overview

Some people cry while reading a sad book or watching videos of baby animals. Others cry only at funerals. And for certain people, the mere hint of anything that arouses emotions can cause tears to flow.

If youve ever had tears well up in a meeting or wept out loud in a movie theatre, you may have wondered if its normal. Is there such a thing as crying too often or too much?

There are no guidelines for how much crying is too much. A study in the 1980s found that women cry an average of 5.3 times per month and men cry an average of 1.3 times per month. A newer study found that the average duration for a crying session was eight minutes.

If youre concerned that youre crying too much, if you cant seem to stop crying, or have started crying more than usual, talk to your doctor. It may be a sign of depression or another mood disorder.

There are a lot of reasons, besides having an immediate emotional response, why you may cry more than normal. Tearfulness is frequently associated with depression and anxiety. People often experience the two conditions at the same time. Certain neurological conditions can also make you cry or laugh uncontrollably.

Depression

Depression is a mood disorder in which you have persistent feelings of sadness that last more than a few weeks. Activities you once found pleasurable may no longer interest you. Symptoms of depression may include:

sadness and gloominess
feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness
low energy
difficulty concentrating

Your crying may be related to depression if you:

cry over small things or have trouble identifying why youre crying

Anxiety

Pseudobulbar affect

Sudden uncontrollable crying, laughing, or feeling anger can be a symptom of a condition called pseudobulbar affect (PBA). PBA is an involuntary neurological state related to an injury or disturbance in parts of your brain that control your emotions.

Sometimes called emotional incontinence, the uncontrolled emotions associated with PBA often dont match how you feel or what youre experiencing. Because the symptoms are similar, PBA may be misdiagnosed as depression. PBA often occurs in people who have:

Studies indicate that, on average, women cry more often than men. One possible reason for this is that testosterone may inhibit crying. Cultural norms may also account for some of the differences in crying among men and women.

Besides a difference between sexes, people who are empathetic and concerned about the well-being of others may cry more than people who are less empathetic. People who are anxious, insecure, or obsessive, cry more and for longer periods of time than other people.

Glands located above your eyes produce most of your tears. Theyre called lachrymal glands. The word lachrymal means tear. Every time you blink, tears flow to your eyes from ducts attached to your lachrymal glands. This keeps the surface of your eyes lubricated and protects them from substances like dust, smoke, or onion gasses. Tears also drain into your nose.

protective antibodies
enzymes

The chemistry of tears caused by emotion, sometimes called psychic tears, is different than that of tears that moisten and protect your eyes. Psychic tears contain more of the protein-based hormones your body produces under stress.

Theres limited research on the science and psychology of crying. Some researchers believe crying is a way your body gets rid of stress-related hormones. Other studies show tears may trigger the release of endorphins. Endorphins are hormones that make you feel good and reduce pain.

A recent focus of research is the response people have to the chemical content of tears. Studies have shown, for example, that men are less aggressive and less sexually aroused when smelling womens psychic tears.

Approximately 80 percent of people with depression improve significantly with treatment. Treatment for depression and anxiety can include psychotherapy (talk therapy) and medications. Self-care is important, too. Many people find relaxation techniques, meditation, mindfulness, and exercise helpful.

Therapy and medications can also alleviate the effects of PBA. Some people with PBA see an improvement after taking a drug called dextromethorphan hydrobromide and quinidine sulfate (Nuedexta). Nuedexta was developed just for PBA, and its the only drug thats approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat the condition.

Antidepressants may also be prescribed for PBA. However, the FDA hasnt approved the use of antidepressants as a PBA treatment. When a drug is used to treat a condition other than the ones its FDA-approved for, then thats considered off-label drug use.

Some people cry more than others. Women tend to cry more than men, even in cultures where its acceptable for males to cry. Crying more than is normal for you may be a symptom of depression or a neurological disorder.

If youre concerned about the amount youre crying, talk to your doctor.

Theres nothing wrong with crying, but if you want to try to manage your tears, there are some things you can try:

Focus on taking slow, deep breaths. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. This may help you relax, which could also stop the flow of tears.
Relax your facial muscles so your expression is neutral.
Think about something repetitious, like a poem, a song, or nursery rhyme youve memorized.
Take a walk or find another way to temporarily remove yourself from a stressful or upsetting situation.

Fromm and Champion Petfoods' Decision to Leave Chewy.com Lauded

Two pet food manufacturers have severed ties with Chewy.com. Fromm Family Foods in Mequon, Wis., and Champion Petfoods, which has U.S. offices in Auburn, Ky., announced that they will no longer sell their products through the online retailer, which was acquired by PetSmart in May, earning both companies praise from fast-growing pet retail chain Bentleys Pet Stuff.

"The decisions made by Fromm and Champion Pets this past week prove to me there are companies who do not choose the bottom line above all, and made me have some extra hope," said Giovanni Senate, vice president of Bentelys Pet Stuff. "Yes, we know that some companies see the opportunity in the industry as a big one, but independents make choices day in and day out to not make decisions based on market share and profit."

The retailer also praised Tuffys Pet Foods, maker of NutriSource, Pure Vita and Natural Plant brands, which terminated its relationship with Chewy.com in April.

"Fromm and Champion didnt drop Chewy to make it more difficult for their customers," added Senafe. "They did it to try and help their advocates (the independents) surviveat Bentleys we believe in rotating and being loyal to the quality of the products we carry, not the brands behind them, but I am saying they are tremendously different than the hundreds of other brands being sold on these online sites or even in some brick-and-mortar stores Thank you for giving the independent a chance. Thank you for realizing a small selection is harder not easier."

Fromm Family Foods announced its decision on its Facebook page.

"Fromm Family Foods is a fifth generation family owned-and-operated company with a long history of selling our products exclusively to independent pet retailers," the manufacturer wrote. "Fromm believes our products are best sold by retailers who know our product and can offer pet parents whats right for their specific dog or cat. As a result of Chewys sale to PetSmart, they are no longer an authorized retailer of Fromm products."

Fromm directed customers to its website for information on local retailers that will continue to carry their products, as well as a current list of authorized internet retailers.

Champion posted a similar note on its Facebook page. "For more than 25 years, weve been committed to the pet specialty channel," the manufacturer said. "We choose to work exclusively with pet specialists who have intimate knowledge of our foods and are committed to providing expert advice to pet lovers. Chewy has been a longtime retail partner, and weve enjoyed our association with them. However, due to their recent acquisition, Chewy no longer meets our pet specialty requirement to be an Approved ACANA and ORIJEN Retailer."

According to PetSmart officials, Chewy will continue to be led by CEO Ryan Cohen and operate largely as an independent subsidiary of PetSmart, focusing on its current business strategy, while PetSmart will continue to execute its strategic initiatives across the combined company. Both companies will use their shared innovative capabilities and offerings in order to deliver the most value and convenience to customers, officials added.

If you positively reinforce their good behavior, puppies can learn to quit crying in the crate in just a few short days (although some do take longer than that).

Is Your Puppy Crying Because Shes Scared or Lonely?

Your puppy may be crying in the crate because shes scared and lonely.

Shes in a new house full of unknown monsters that could be trying to eat her.

Shes lost her pack and is all alone in her new crate.

In the wild, when puppies find themselves alone, they cry to let other members of the pack know where they are.

What your puppy needs to know is that youll come back, and the crate is safe.

The shortcut to teaching her this is to actually not leave her at night, but put her crate in your room.

If your puppy is not getting enough exercise and burning off that crazy puppy energy, her reaction when you put her in the crate might be to cry and whine.

Putting a puppy, especially a very young puppy, full of energy in a crate is setting them up for failure.

Go play!

Games of tug and fetch, and training to mentally tire out your pup, are great ways to burn off some of that puppy energy.

Playing with toys is another great way to wear them out.

Tire them out or keep them entertained.
